A big thank you to the Janesville City Council for passing the recent expanded electronic-cigarette ban throughout Janesville. This affirms the value of smoke-free and clean air for the health and safety of residents.
Even though e-cigarettes may not produce smoke, they do expose others to secondhand emissions. Because e-cigarettes are not a federally regulated product and there are no long-term studies on these products, there is little known about the potential health consequences these can cause.
In addition, studies have shown that e-cigarette use among youth is increasing at alarming rates. Young people who use e-cigarettes are twice as likely to begin smoking cigarettes, according to the Nicotine and Tobacco Research study. This transition can set those young people up for a life of addiction to nicotine and tobacco products.
It is admirable to see Janesville taking the lead both in the state and in the country by enacting this ban to ensure that all residents are entitled to clean air.
