ELKHORN—A Delavan man is accused of stealing $40,000 from his mother to support his gambling habit, a criminal complaint alleges.
James H. Wehrwein, 38, of 622 Highway 50, Delavan, was helping his mother pay her bills online and had limited access to her credit cards to do so, a complaint filed in Walworth County Court states.
The woman took out a $30,000 loan for her business and home and was under the impression she paid it off in September 2014, the complain states.
She was informed Wehrwein took the loan money and added his name to the woman's accounts to pay off his credit card debt caused by gambling, according to the complaint.
Wehrwein's charges date to Sept. 15, 2014, and Feb. 23, 2015. Wehrwein told police the last time he used a credit card was in December 2014 or January 2015 after adding his name to his mother's accounts in March 2014, the complaint states.
Wehrwein is free on a signature bond. He will appear in court next at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Walworth County Judicial Center.
