A seventh-inning rally fell just short for Janesville's American Legion baseball team in a tournament game at Plover on Sunday.
The Madison Impact built a five-run lead in the second inning thanks to some shaky control on the mound from Janesville, and Post 205 had to climb uphill the rest of the way in an 8-7 loss.
“We had one out and the top of the order coming up (in the seventh), but we couldn't get the big hit,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. Janesville trailed 8-5 entering the final inning, but four walks and an error by Madison had Janesville a hit away from tying the game or taking the lead.
Post 205 (18-10) also left the bases loaded in the fourth inning after scoring five runs in that frame. Two Janesville players walked in to score, and Kevin Brandt had a two-run single. Kevin Carlson contributed the fifth run of the fourth. Schenck was upbeat about the upcoming regional tournament.
“We played three one-run games against really good opponents and got our pitching in line for regionals,” he said.
Those games begin Thursday at Riverside Park. In the double-elimination tournament, Beloit plays Lake Geneva at 5 p.m. before Janesville takes on Genoa City. The winners and losers of those two games will play each other Friday to determine Saturday's games.
