MADISON--Janesville Parker didn’t take home the girls golf title in Friday’s Madison Edgewood Invitational at Yahara Hills, but the sixth-place finish was encouraging for Viking coach Mary Ross.
The Vikings set a school-record low score of 337 while taking sixth in the talent-filled 22-team field. Five of the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin’s top eight ranked squads were in the field.
“There were a lot of perennial favorites in the state tournament there,” Ross said. “And we have room for improvement, so we’re pretty excited about that.”
Arrowhead won the team title with a 31-over-par 319. Green Bay Notre Dame was second with 322, while Big Eight Conference favorite Middleton was third at 325.
Defending WIAA Division 2 state champion Madison Edgewood (329) and Madison Memorial (332) also topped the Vikings’ 337 count.
Notre Dame’s Jessie Staed topped all individuals with a 1-under 71.
Taylor Wyss led the Vikings with a 4-over 76, which put her sixth in the individual standings and tops among Big Eight Conference competitors.
“She shot her lowest competitive round ever,” Ross said. “She was even-par on the front and 4-over on the back. She played incredibly well.”
Micayla Richards added an 84, which tied for 24th best with Milton High’s Maddie McCue.
Kailey McDade added an 88, and Lindsey Ahrens added an 89.
“Those four girls had set the school record (338) last year at Riverside,” Ross said. “The girls wanted to play within themselves, and they all did a great job of doing that.”
Milton High, which received honorable mention in the first Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association poll with Parker, finished eighth with a 361 score.
Courtney Terrill led the Red Hawks with an 83, which tied her for 22nd individually. McCue had an 84, and CheyAnn Knudsen shot an 86.
Edgerton finished 22nd with a 448 total.
Parker will compete in the Beloit Scramble at Krueger Golf Course on Tuesday.
