Delavan police arrest suspect in stabbing
DELAVAN—Police arrested a man who is suspected of stabbing another man at the Delavan Super 8 Motel on Saturday night, Delavan Police Chief Timothy O'Neill said Tuesday.
Eduardo Godinez Diaz, 29, was arrested on charges of second-degree reckless injury and disorderly conduct after police say he stabbed Juan Lopez-Perez, 21, according to a news release.
Lopez-Perez was listed in good condition at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville , O'Neill said.
At about 10:22 p.m. Saturday Delavan paramedics and police responded to the Super 8 Motel, 518 Borg Road, for a report of man on the ground outside Room 121 with possible appendicitis, O'Neill said.
Police later suspected Godinez Diaz stabbed Lopez-Perez with a knife.
Godinez Diaz was taken to the Walworth County Jail, where he is awaiting formal charges from the district attorney's office, O'Neill said. No charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, according to court records.
Although the exact motive is unclear, O'Neill said Godinez Diaz and Lopez-Perez know each other. It appears a verbal dispute led to the stabbing, he said.
O'Neill said even the police department's Spanish-speaking officers had trouble interpreting what people were saying Saturday.
“Details are sketchy,” he said.
Neither man has a permanent address, O'Neill said. Online court records list a Baxley, Georgia, address for Godinez Diaz.
Court Commissioner Kelly Iselin set a $10,000 cash bond for Godinez Diaz on Tuesday, court records show. Conditions of bond include no contact with Lopez-Perez or the Delavan Super 8 Motel.
Godinez Diaz is scheduled for a bail/bond hearing before Judge Kristine Drettwan at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.
