Festivals on horizon around Janesville

JANESVILLE -- Break out the flip flops, lawn chairs and sunscreen. It's time to enjoy festival season in Janesville and nearby communities. Here are some events that are sure to help you get your fill of music, food and summer fun.

Wally's Music Fest

June 2-3

Schilberg Park, High Street, Milton

Get in the groove for big hair, soaring guitars and iconic pop when Wally's Music Fest takes Milton back to the 1980s on Friday and Saturday, June 2 and June 3. The music festival, open to those 21 and older, is held in Schilberg Park.

Music begins at 6 p.m. Friday and at noon Saturday and alternates between two stages. Food trucks and vendors, merchandise vendors and a beer and wine tent will be open on the festival grounds. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Admission is $15 for one day or $20 for both.

Freedom Fest

July 1

New Life Assembly of God, 2416 N. Wright Road, Janesville

This free festival opens at 10 a.m. and caps off with a fireworks show at about 9:30 p.m. In between, there are carnival rides, music, a petting zoo and plenty of food.

The Christian musical entertainment includes Citizen Way, Flame and headliner Jordan Feliz.

In addition, the church hosts its annual Day of Compassion, which includes free health screenings and a grocery and clothing giveaway.

Attendees might want to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Carry-in food and drink also are allowed, but there's no alcohol and no smoking on the grounds.

Independence Day on the Rock

July 4

Traxler Park, 600 N. Main St., Janesville

Bring the family for an afternoon and evening of festive fun along the riverbanks as the Rock Aqua Jays host Independence Day on the Rock. The free festival opens at 3 p.m. Highlights include the band Junkmale, playing from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.; the ski show at 7 p.m. and fireworks at dusk.

Edgerton Tobacco Heritage Days

July 14-16

downtown Edgerton; Central Park, 312 N. Main St.; and Racetrack Park, 900 Stoughton Road, Edgerton

A weekend-long community celebration, Edgerton Tobacco Heritage Days is slated to include dozens of activities in the city's downtown and in Racetrack Park. In addition, an arts and crafts fair and other activities will take place in Central Park on Saturday.

Tallman Arts Festival

Aug. 6

Rock County Historical Society campus, 426 N. Jackson St., Janesville

The 60th annual festival will feature artisans, food vendors, live music and more to help fund the programs and historical buildings at the society. A portion of the proceeds also benefits Rock County youth through the Art with Heart program. Browse through the artistic selections from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Milton House Arts and Crafts on the Lawn, Milton Area Chamber of Commerce Chicken BBQ

Aug. 20

Milton House Museum grounds, 18 S. Janesville St.; and North Goodrich Park, Parkview Drive, Milton

Nearly 100 artists and crafters will fill the grounds of the Milton House Museum for the annual Arts and Crafts on the Lawn from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to the handcrafted items, the rain-or-shine event will feature an ice cream social, food vendors and reduced rate admission for tours of the Milton House Museum, the only Underground Railroad station in Wisconsin that is open for tours.

Just down the way in North Goodrich Park, the Milton Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Chicken BBQ from 10 a.m. until the food is sold out. When you're full, enjoy music in the park or check out the car show sponsored by the Lions Club.
