Schaefer was longtime county board member, restaurant owner

When Joe Schaefer  of Lyons was re-elected as a Walworth County Board supervisor  April 5, he earned the distinction of the longest continuous-serving board member in the county's history at 42 years.

Schaefer, 73, died Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the St. Luke Medical Center in Milwaukee.

A Vietnam veteran and a Burlington, Wisconsin native, Schaefer also was the longtime owner of Ye Olde Hotel, a tavern, restaurant and landmark in the small town of Lyons.

Schaefer was profiled in Walworth County Sunday in April 2016, shortly after his re-election to the Walworth County Board, where he served District 2.
