Two in hospital, three more injured, in Tuesday crash on Highway 51
JANESVILLE—Two people remained hospitalized Friday after a Tuesday-night accident that led to a shutdown of Highway 51.
A passenger in one of the vehicles, Cynthia L. Spangler, 55, of 532 Lawton Ave. No. 2202, Beloit, was downgraded from fair to critical condition Friday at University Hospital in Madison.
Driver Amy A. Mohorko, 45, of 532 Lawton Ave. No. 2102, Beloit, was listed in fair condition Friday in the intensive care unit at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville.
Driver Michael A. Van Eimeren, 54, of 324 N. Cherry St., Whitewater, was hospitalized Tuesday and dismissed from Mercy on Thursday.
Two others were treated and released Tuesday at Mercy: Driver Aimee A. Aimers, 38, of 1753 Cranston Road, Beloit; and a passenger in the Mohorko car, John D. Mohorko Jr., 19, of 532 Lawton Ave. No. 2102, Beloit.
Janesville police issued Van Eimeren a citation for inattentive driving in the three-vehicle accident.
According to an accident report, Aimers told police she was southbound on the highway near Airport Road when she stopped for a vehicle that was stopped in the left lane ahead of her.
Police did not determine why the first car, which was not hit, had stopped.
Van Eimeren came up from behind and told police he didn't see Aimers' car until it was too late.
The impact of the minivan Van Eimeren was driving pushed Aimers' vehicle across the centerline into oncoming traffic, when it hit the northbound car driven by Amy Mohorko.
A witness told police he stopped because of a “large item” in the road, and he then saw Aimers' car stop and the van hitting Aimers' car.
This story was revised Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, to reflect the following correction and to update the conditions of the other accident victims who were admitted to hospitals.
