He attended Janesville schools and graduated from Janesville High School in 1943. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army along with special friends, J.P. Cullen and John McGuire. The three served as combat infantrymen in France and Germany, and were always together. After V. E. Day, they were sent to the Philippines. After V-J Day, David graduated from Beloit College. He worked at Merchants & Savings Bank in Janesville, and later moved to Houston, TX, working at Cravens Dargen and Company. He later returned to Janesville, and became co-owner of his father’s insurance company, Green and Hammarlund. David married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Johnson, on July 21, 1951. They had three children: Timothy (Jo Ann) Green of Janesville, Nancy (Joel) Bailey of Janesville, and Richard (Melissa) Green of Madison, MS; seven grandchildren: Amanda (Todd) Olson, Andrea (Steve) Pease, Alexander (fiancée’ Amelia Barnes) Green, Anthony Green, Brian Green, Daniel Millis, and Kari (Shawn) Spurlock; and seven great-grandchildren. David was past president of Rock County Real Estate Board, a member of the Janesville Kiwanis Club Hixson Fellows and served with perfect attendance for over 30 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, had been an usher captain, served on various committees, and was a choir member for 40 years. David enjoyed high school sports as a basketball player and spectator, played golf and bowled (admitting to being not very good at either, but did record two holes-in-one). He was a member of The Gazettes Sports Hall of Fame committee. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan since 1930. David and his beloved wife enjoyed vacationing in Gulf Shore, AL, and cruising the Caribbean. David was dedicated to serving as a volunteer escort at Mercy Hospital for 29 years.

David is survived by his wife; children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and sister, Barbara (Noel) Richards of Green Valley, AZ. He was preceded in death by his brother, Matheson.
