JANESVILLE—Police spent hours canvassing a south-side Janesville neighborhood but as of 1:15 p.m. Tuesday had no suspect identified in a Monday-night shooting.

Police are particularly motivated in this case because shootings are rare in Janesville, said Lt. Keith Lawver of the detective bureau, adding, “We just want to catch this guy.”

One hope is that someone in the area has video surveillance footage that might show the shooter or the getaway car,  Lawver said.

Lawver asked that anyone in the area—even residents whose cameras were not able to record the incident itself—check their recordings from that time of night to see if there's anything there that might help police.

The shooting was reported about 8:45 p.m. Monday at a multiunit apartment complex at 1210 Kellogg Ave.

The shooting victim, 24, was shot in the head and torso and was still hospitalized in fair condition Tuesday afternoon, Lawver said.

A second victim was robbed of his property in the incident. Police are not revealing what item or items were taken.

Police said the 24-year-old shooting victim and another 24-year-old man had stepped outside to smoke cigarettes in the 1200 block of Kellogg Avenue when they were approached by a man wearing a mask. The masked man told them he was robbing them.

One of the men reached for the handgun, and the robber fired at him, Lawver said.

The robber fled westward and got into a car that went westward, police said.

Police said they are looking for a white male, around 6 feet tall, of average build, who was wearing a zip-up, dark-colored hoodie with light blue lettering on the front, dark jeans and a dark-colored mask.
