Walworth County highway worker struck on I-43 in Elkhorn
ELKHORN—A vehicle struck and injured a Walworth County highway employee on Interstate 43 southbound in Elkhorn on Wednesday afternoon while the worker removed construction signs, according to a news release from the Elkhorn Police Department.
According to the release:
The injured employee was transported to a medical facility and was responsive and alert upon transport.
Authorities were called at 1:14 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash on I-43 near the Centralia Street overpass. An initial investigation showed the highway department truck had recently pulled onto the shoulder, and the driver and passenger exited to remove signs from a previous construction project.
A southbound vehicle driven by a 67-year-old female struck the employee, and the woman remained on scene and is cooperating with authorities.
Police were withholding the names of the people involved pending notification of family.
I-43 southbound remained open, and the investigation is ongoing. Assisting police at the scene were the Walworth County Sheriff's Office and Wisconsin State Patrol, which is assisting with the investigation and accident reconstruction.
