Herbert "Herb" Littau Sorensen, Janesville, WI (1930-2015)

Herbert "Herb" L. Sorensen, age 85, of Janesville, died on Monday, Sept. 7, 2015, at his home. He was born on Feb. 3, 1930, in Lyndon Station, WI, the son of the late Herbert W. and Julia (Littau) Sorensen. Herb attended Lyndon Station State Grade School and graduated from Mauston High in 1947. He later graduated from Barber College in Chicago in 1948, and barbered at Camp Douglas until 1951. At that time, he joined the US Navy during the Korean War in 1951, and he was honorably discharged in 1955. After he returned from service, Herb continued his education at the Juneau County Teacher's College and LaCrosse University, where he earned his Bachelors of Education Degree in teaching. He later earned his MS degree in guidance counseling from Stout University. On July 16, 1966, he married Doris Olenick and he adopted her two sons: Joseph and David. After five years of marriage, Herb and Doris, had two more sons, Herb A. and Scott. Herb worked for over 32 years at Marshall Jr. High School, first as a seventh grade teacher and 26 years as a guidance counselor, retiring in 1991. He loved working with the students and teachers and has many fond memories of them. When he retired he became involved in volunteer work. He was a life-time member of the N.E.A., W.E.A., American Legion and the V.F.W.

Herb is survived by his wife, Doris of Janesville; four sons: Joseph Sorensen of Riverside, MO, David (Pam) Sorensen of Camden Point, MO, Herb Sorensen of Sun Prairie, WI, and Scott Sorensen of Emeryville, CA; two grandchildren: Jennifer (Rick) Wilbur and Anthony Sorensen, both of Janesville; and great-grandchildren, Keira and Milena Wilbur. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Marion Soltis and Shirley Holmes.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015, at the WHITCOMB - LYNCH FUNERAL HOME. Full Military Rites will be provided by VFW Kienow - Hilt Post 1621. Visitation will be on Friday from 12 Noon until the time of the service at the FUNERAL HOME. A luncheon will follow the service at the funeral home and Herb has requested that everyone please wear bright colored clothing to honor and celebrate his life. Entombment will be at Milton Lawns Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be greatly appreciated if they were made to: Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
