With some of the state's best girls golf teams and players gathered at Maple Bluff Country Club in Madison, Mia Seeman and the Milton Red Hawks beat Verona in a two-hole team playoff to win the 2015 Crusade Fore a Cure.

Seeman shot a 2-over 76 to take fourth place. Mikala Hauck of Monona Grove finished at 2-under to take medalist honors. CheyAnn Knudsen (84), Leah Foster (85) and Taylor Hakala (86) rounded out Milton's varsity squad.

Keara Richards led Janesville Parker with a 91, an improvement of 11 strokes from her score in the same event last year, Vikings coach Mary Ross said.

“She played No. 1 for us and had to play with Mikala Hauck, Bailey Smith (finished second) and Lauren Skibba (finished fifth), and she did a good job keeping her composure,” Ross said.

Parker's next meet is a Big Eight triangular against Verona and Janesville Craig at Tumbledown Trails in Verona. Play starts at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Fundraising event

Perhaps more important than the competition was the cause the golfers played for: the players raised approximately $6,000 dollars for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the well-known breast cancer nonprofit.

Before play began, the foundation provided a luncheon, and players met breast cancer survivors and women currently fighting the disease, Ross said. The course and the players drape themselves in pink, the color symbolic of breast cancer awareness.

“It makes the girls aware of their own health and what they have to be mindful of,” Ross said. “It's quite an event, and hats off to Maple Bluff for allowing us to play it there.”
