ELKHORN—Long-time Walworth County Judge James Carlson will not be seeking re-election.

Carlson announced his exit this week in a memo to the Walworth County Bar Association.

The judge was appointed in 1979 and elected in 1980. He has served continuously since.
Carlson, who is the Branch 2 judge, will finish his term that ends July 31.

In the memo, Carlson thanked fellow and former judges, attorneys, court reporters and courthouse staff for a “wonderful career.”

“I commend you for the work you provided in recent years to breathe new life into the bar,” Carlson wrote.

Carlson's seat and Walworth County Branch 4 Judge David Reddy's seat are up for election Tuesday, April 5.

The primary is Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Carlson presides over misdemeanor and traffic matters. Reddy is the felony court judge.
