Bert Blain Memorial Heart Walk
When: Registration at 7:30 a.m., opening ceremonies at 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 23.
Where: Rotary Botanical Gardens, 1455 Palmer Drive, Janesville.
Distance: 1 or 3-mile walk
Purpose of walk: To raise money for the American Heart Association's research, educational and awareness programs in Wisconsin and across the country. Heart disease and stroke are America's No. 1 and No. 4 killers.
Walkers are encouraged to raise $100 or more by collecting donations. The walk's webpage has a goal of $508,000 with $97,905 already raised.
The event includes health screenings, a tribute wall, a survivor breakfast, training on “Hands Only CPR” and team photos.
History of the walk: After partnering with the American Heart Association some 23 years ago, Blain's Farm & Fleet has worked with local companies and the community to raise over $4 million for the fight against heart disease. The walk currently is ranked ninth nationwide.
