Resident escapes fire thanks to watchful neighbor

DARIEN -- One Darien firefighter was treated for a heat-related emergency Saturday, July 18, 2015 while battling a single-family house fire in the town of Richmond.

A neighbor had alerted the occupant of the home and assisted her to safety before firefighters arrived, according to a news release from the Darien Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched at 7:43 p.m. to a home at N6460 Anderson Drive near Turtle Lake and discovered smoke coming from the eves upon arrival.

Darien Fire Department Chief Justin Schuenke requested M.A.B.A.S. Box 23-3. Sharon, city of Delavan, town of Delavan, Whitewater and Elkhorn fire departments responded. The fire was under control and extinguished within minutes, according to the release.

Investigation of the fire determined the cause to be electrical, starting in the attic. Damages are estimated at $75,000.

One firefighter suffered from a heat related emergency and was treated by Mercy MD1 on scene.

The Darien Fire Department reminds you to check your smoke alarms monthly and replace your batteries twice a year.
