JANESVILLE—A missing Janesville man was found safe Wednesday  in South Dakota after being missing for a day, the Rock County Sheriff's Office reported.

The daughter of Hermes D. Miller, 83, reported him missing Tuesday afternoon. She told deputies that Miller was “most likely geographically disoriented due to a medical condition,” according to a news release.

At 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, deputies, while monitoring Miller's financial card account, learned of a purchase in Redfield, South Dakota, and alerted Redfield authorities.

Redfield authorities found Miller safe at 3:45 p.m., according to a news release.

After indications that Miller had been in South Wayne, Wisconsin; Dubuque, Iowa; Rockwell City, Iowa; and Winfred, South Dakota, the sheriff's office issued an update, saying:

“We can confirm Mr. Hermes was positively sighted at the last two locations, as he asked store attendants for directions to Janesville. However, directions provided may have been erroneous, as Madison, South Dakota, and Rock County, Minnesota; are in close proximity to Winfred, South Dakota.”

The state Department of Justice and federal authorities issued a Silver Alert on Wednesday to help in the search.
