D2 softball roundup: Delavan-Darien, Evansville, Whitewater, Elkhorn advance
Delavan-Darien’s softball team is back in the WIAA Division 2 regional finals.
It took a sixth-inning rally by the Comets to get there.
They scored three runs in the frame to escape with a 4-2 home victory over Monroe. Delavan-Darien will face Beloit Turner (on the road) or Evansville (at home) depending on the winner of that matchup in today’s regional semi.
Delavan-Darien junior pitcher Jennah Speth started the game with a solo home run to give the Comets the lead, but Monroe responded with a pair of runs in the third.
That 2-1 lead held up until the sixth, when Speth doubled home catcher Katelyn Gonzalez to make it 2-2. Brooke Boss belted a double of her own to plate Speth with the go-ahead run. Cindy Crawford sacrificed Boss to third, and she scored on a clutch single by Hunter Huber.
Speth allowed two runs on four hits and four walks in seven innings. She struck out nine.
