Runs came at a premium in Tuesday’s WIAA Division 2 regional softball opener in Monroe.

The Cheesemakers scored a pair of unearned runs in the third and held on despite giving up an unearned run in the seventh. They beat Edgerton 2-1 to set up a regional-semifinal showdown with Delavan-Darien in Delavan today.

An Edgerton error gave Monroe runners at first and third with two outs in the third. The Cheesemakers stole second and got on the scoreboard with an infield single by Brooke Adams. Adams stole second, and the Crimson Tide committed another blunder in attempting to throw her out, allowing Kaya Teasdale to score.

The 2-0 lead held up until the seventh. Megan McNett led off the inning with a double—the game’s only extra-base hit—and moved to third on a one-out groundout. McNett scored when Monroe committed an error on a grounder up the middle, but Edgerton could advance the potential game-tying runner no further.

Edgerton finished with an 11-12 record.
