SHARON TOWNSHIP—A Madison man was killed Sunday morning when his motorcycle crashed into the side of a semitrailer at the intersection of County Highway K and Townhall Road in the town of Sharon, according to a news release from the Walworth County Sheriff's Office.

Walworth County sheriffs responding to the scene of the accident at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, found Erik Belanger, 33, of Madison, lying in the roadway. Belanger, the driver and sole occupant of the motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Walworth County Medical Examiner's Office.

Initial investigation indicated Belanger was traveling at a high speed westbound on Townhall Road when he failed to stop at the posted stop sign. The semi was southbound on Highway K and did not have a stop sign.  The motorcycle crashed into the side of the semi-tractor.

The driver of the semi, identified as Allen Swartout, 61, from Beloit, was not injured.

The Wisconsin State Patrol and the Walworth County Sheriff's Crash Investigation Unit were called to the scene. The investigation into the accident remains ongoing.

Also responding were the Sharon Fire and Rescue, the Walworth County Medical Examiner's Office, the Walworth County Department of Public Works, and the Town of Sharon Public Works.  The Village of Walworth Police Department assisted with traffic control.
