J. Geoffrey Magnus, 73, of Beloit, WI, died unexpectedly on April 29, 2015, at his home. Dr. Magnus was a clinical social worker and psychotherapist in private practice in Beloit, and Rockford, IL. Until the middle of last year, he was a clinical social worker and teaching associate at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, where he had worked since 1997. Geoff loved the outdoors, especially hiking, cross-country skiing and long-distance bike riding with his wife, Betty, all over Wisconsin, Canada, and in Europe. He enjoyed gardening. He loved to make people laugh with a wry sense of humor. He was an avid reader, both recreationally and professionally, and he shared his reviews with professional colleagues. He enjoyed going to concerts featuring classical and folk music. He earned his master of social work (MSW) from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1980. Earlier, he graduated from Bard College at Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, in 1964, with a BA degree, earned his doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mathematical Biology at the University of Chicago in 1970, and did a post-doctoral fellowship on the physiological basis of memory at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA. He was an assistant professor of zoology at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA, from 1971 to 1974 and an assistant professor of psychology at Beloit College from 1974 to 1979. In addition to his work as a psychotherapist, he also was a certified alcoholism and drug counselor. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work and a fellow of the Wisconsin Sex Offender Treatment Network. He was born on Feb. 11, 1942, in New Haven, CT, to John and Gladys Magnus.
J. Geoffrey is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Magnus; a daughter, Naomi Magnus; and his stepmother, Phyllis Magnus.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 11, 2015, at the DALEY MURPHY WISCH & ASSOCIATES FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit WI, with Rabbi Shlomo Wing of Congregation B'nai Abraham, officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home. A shiva minyan will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Beloit Regional Hospice, Caritas Beloit or the 150th anniversary campaign of Bard College.
