BELOIT—A Sunday morning traffic stop resulted in a Beloit man being arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated, sixth offense.

At 11:57 a.m. Sunday at Fourth Street and Liberty Avenue, Beloit, a Rock County Sheriff's Office Deputy stopped a 2000 Olds Alero for a traffic violation.

When the deputy was talking to the driver, he noticed the strong smell of intoxicants.

The driver, John P. Purdy, 44, Beloit, admitted he had been drinking, refused to do field testing, saying he would likely be over the legal limit.

Purdy was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, sixth offense and operating after revocation.

Purdy was transported to the Rock County Jail where he is awaiting a court appearance on Monday.
