Janesville Athletic Club closing downtown facility
JANESVILLE—Janesville Athletic Club owner Mark Groshan recently announced the downtown facility at 15 W. Milwaukee St. will close Feb. 7 due to anticipated lack of parking.
The parking plaza used at the “express” fitness center was deemed unsafe and will be removed, Groshan wrote in a letter posted at the downtown facility.
The city plans to remove the parking plaza near the downtown facility next year, but it could be shut down sooner if there are more safety concerns, Groshan wrote in the posting.
“The city has a new vision for downtown that does not include the necessary parking for our business,” Groshan wrote in the posting.
The Janesville Athletic Club has a primary facility located at 1301 Black Bridge Road.
“It is sad to have to close the express, but we are using this situation to combine our two clubs and make the Janesville Athletic Club the best club Janesville has ever seen,” Groshan wrote in the posting.
The Black Bridge Road facility recently underwent an expansion and major renovations. The group fitness room was remodeled, a playroom was added and the weight and cardio areas were expanded.
The spinning room formerly located at the downtown facility was moved to the main club.
The updates to the main club come as nationwide changes in the fitness industry and the addition of several new gyms in Janesville push the athletic club to stay competitive.
In recent years, Anytime Fitness, Planet Fitness and CrossFit have opened doors in Janesville.
Groshan has owned the athletic club for 15 years.
The Gazette was unable to reach Groshan before press time.
