Margaret Lee "Peggy" Butow, Janesville, WI (1936-2014)

Margaret Lee (Peggy) Butow, 78, Janesville, passed away at the Cedar Crest Retirement Community on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014. Peggy was born on Jan. 30, 1936, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Hervey Albert and Inez Genevieve (Austin) Butow. Peggy graduated from the Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped in Janesville, in 1954, and from Beloit College with a Bachelors Degree in Government in 1958. She was a member of the Theta Pi Gamma Sorority. After college, Peggy was a full time instructor of history, technology, and braille music at the Hadley School of the Blind in Winnetka, IL, from July 1, 1959, until she retired on Jan. 26, 2001. She was loved and deeply respected by her students and fellow faculty members and was recognized by the school for her achievement in 1999, with a 40 Years of Service Award. Peggy fondly recalled some of her best times from youth were spent with her cousins at their summer cottage in Waupaca, WI. Throughout her life, she enjoyed crafting, especially crochet, and she was an accomplished pianist, having learned to read braille music at age six. Peggy was loved by her many family members and friends around the country, and she was an inspiration to all whose lives she touched.
Peggy is survived by cousins: Phyllis Jean (Moe) Gottschalk of Marinette, WI, Donald (Theresa) Moe of Hickory, NC, Donald (Judye) Butow of Willits, CA, Martha Butow, Mary Ann (Butow) Newman, Judith Butow and Samuel Layne of Willits, CA, Patty (Butow) McKinnis and Michael McKinnis of St. Louis, MO; and by a host of other relatives and friends. Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Hervey; her mother, Inez; and cousins: David Butow, Robert Gottschalk, and Quince Butow.
Peggy was laid to rest beside her parents at Milton Lawns Memorial Park on Monday, Nov. 24, 2014. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date at MILTON LAWNS MEMORIAL PARK CHAPEL, 2200 Milton Avenue, Janesville, WI 53545 with Pastor Carl F. Cramer presiding.
