Janesville police seek man after wild escape attempt leads to crash

JANESVILLE--Police are asking for the public's help in finding Shay S. Dooley, 27, after a dramatic crash on the Monterey Bridge on Monday afternoon.

Police accuse Dooley of driving the large SUV that fled police in the 1500 block of Center Avenue on the city's south side,

The incident began when the Janesville Police Department Street Crimes Unit was conducting a drug investigation on the city's south side, and officers tried to stop the SUV on Center Avenue near Nicolet Street, according to the news release.

The vehicle sped north on Center Avenue, and offiers immediately broke off pursuit out of safety concerns, the news release states.

The SUV continued speeding north, at one point crossing into the oncoming lane. The driver then tried to go over the median on the Monterey Bridge, disabling the tires, and the SUV crashed into the bridge dividers on Center Avenue near Riverside Street, according to the release.

The driver then fled on foot, eluding police. Police report detaining a female passenger in the SUV.

Dooley is wanted on charges that include hit and run, felony fleeing, recklessly endangering safety and possession of marijuana, according to the news release.

He also is wanted on warrants charging previous crimes that include felony fleeing, recklessly endangering safety, second-offense intoxicated driving and possession of marijuana.
