What's going on here? New Janesville ALDI to open Dec. 11
JANESVILLE—Construction continues on a 17,000-square-foot ALDI grocery store that will sit on four acres near the intersection of Highway 14 and Deerfield Drive across from Pine Tree Plaza.
ALDI, which calls itself the nation's leading low-price grocer, operates nearly 1,300 stores in 32 states, primarily from Kansas to the East Coast.
It's operated for more than 20 years in a 15,000-square-foot store at 2717 Milton Ave. next to Toys 'R' Us.
Atty McGrath, vice president of the ALDI's Oak Creek Division, said the new location is more central, making the store more accessible for area shoppers.
McGrath said the new store would feature higher ceilings, improved natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials such as recycled materials and energy-saving refrigeration and light bulbs.
It also will have more space for fresh products such as produce, McGrath said.
The new store will boost ALDI's employment in Janesville to 12.
It is scheduled to open Thursday, Dec. 11.
Gale Price, Janesville's manager of building and development services, said two entrances and exits would serve the new store.
One will empty onto Deerfield Drive at the traffic signals for the access road to Best Buy and the Pine Tree Plaza. The other will be farther north on Deerfield, almost across the street from Starbucks.
Price said the city has been working with ALDI since 2013 on the site development.
ALDI got city approval to build the store without a public conditional-use process and without city council action because the project is less than 25,000 square feet on less than five acres.
As of Thursday, ALDI's website listed the Milton Avenue building and land for sale for $650,000.
