The System No Longer Works
The two party system no longer works in this country. No need for tears or panic, just an admission of the obvious. Like a relationship whose impending end is a forgone conclusion, we need to face the truth before we can move forward. The signs have been there for some time. The lies, the deceit, the pent up anger and most of all the loss of trust.
When two Parties can no longer work together for the good of the family (our Nation), when anger and animosity produce nothing but lies and denials, when concessions and compromise are no longer an option, it is time to end the misery and dissolve the dysfunctional union between two parties. It need not be traumatic. Just chalk it up to a bad relationship that has run it's course.
We need more political Parties; perhaps a Green Party and a Progressive Party and a Social Conservative Party. They wouldn't necessarily have to field their own Presidential candidates but would run their own for Congress and the Senate. This would allow for a variety of alliances when it came to specific laws and issues, rather than the complete refusal by one Party or another to negotiate.
The Tea Party certainly, needs to be on its own. Voting has consequences and many are now experiencing voter's remorse. What started out as a grass roots movement with some good ideas has morphed into the fiscal jihadist, take-no-prisoner sect of the Republican Party, paralyzing it and seemingly preferring an economic meltdown in order to teach the Nation a lesson about overspending. Rather than reforming Washington, it has further deformed it.
I admit that becoming a multi-party system is probably a stretch. But if we really want to clean up Washington, we have to start with “clean elections” - that is, ones that are publicly funded. As long as politicians at every level in both parties cater to the “special interests”of PAC's, corporations, wealthy individuals, Unions, et al, that they are dependent upon to finance their re-election campaigns, little is likely to change and we will never live in a truly representative democracy.
At the very least it would rid the airwaves of the incessant assault of false and obnoxious campaign commercials.
