U.S. Supreme Court to hear Illinois carp case Friday

WASHINGTON D.C. -- The U.S. Supreme Court will consider Friday Michigan's request for an immediate shutdown of the locks on Chicago waterways to keep Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes.

Wisconsin and several other Great Lakes states have joined in supporting Michigan's lawsuit

A decision could come as early as that day. The following Monday, the day when the court normally issues decisions and orders, is Martin Luther King's birthday, a federal holiday.

Michigan and several other Great Lakes states are seeking a preliminary injunction to shut the locks out of concern that a federally built electronic barrier isn't sufficient to stop the invasive fish, which threatens to wreck commercial and sport fishing in the Great Lakes.

But the federal government, the state of Illinois, the city of Chicago and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago, which owns the locks, have argued that shutting the locks, even temporarily, would hurt the Chicago-area economy and create other problems without necessarily stopping the fish.
