Sailor exemplifies sportsmanship on the water
GENEVA LAKE -- Apparently Meg Six learned more than the intricacies of tacking and jibing while growing up sailing on Geneva Lake.
She learned to true meaning of sportsmanship.
Earlier this month, at the Midwest qualifier for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association's single-handed national championships, Six gave her boat to another sailor whose mast had snapped.
Her remarkable deed has caught the attention the of the sailing world, and she was named Sailor of the Week by U.S. Sailing.
Six, a University of Wisconsin-Madison sophomore, began sailing on Geneva Lake when she was 13. Now, she races for the University of Wisconsin Sailing Team.
In the first of three races Oct. 11 in Milwaukee, Six was running second behind her Wisconsin teammate, Christine Porter, and just ahead of Lauren Knoles of Michigan State.
Six was already out of the running for the national championships, but Knoles was second overall in the regatta when her mast snapped.
So Six swapped boats with Knoles, who went on to qualify for the national regatta beginning Friday in Corpus Christi, Tex.

Meg and Christine both teach sailing at Geneva Lake Sailing School and are wonderful examples of what the sport, and sports in general should be about. Congrats to their parents and the entire community for raising some sharp gals with a great set of morals.
