New Yorker settled in Elkhorn, started medical practice
The former home of Dr. Howard Young is located on the southeast corner of Lincoln and Rockwell streets in Elkhorn. The Queen Anne house was recently restored.
Originally, this was the home of the Hooper family; only later did it become the home of Dr. Howard Young. Young’s grandfather, Dr. George Henry Young, began the history of that family serving as doctor to the residents of Elkhorn. He came from New York in 1843 and settled in this community.
Dr. G.H. Young served as an associate supervisor in 1847 and as a member of the county board for the village in 1850. He was mayor of the city in 1899 and again in 1906.
Young and his wife, Nancy, had a son, George H., who followed into his father’s profession. George H. first studied medicine at the Chicago Medical College in 1881. George H. Jr.’s son also became a doctor.
Albert Beckwith’s History of Walworth County mentions that George Henry Young Jr. was a member of the board of pension examiners who were appointed to sit at Elkhorn in August of 1899.
