Of Peonies

By DANNIEL WARD-PACKARD   Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 9:46 a.m.

Peonies are called the queen of the garden flowers. They are one of the most recognizable garden plants, very long lived and very easy to grow. Most of us can remember a neighbor or a grandmother who had a cluster of peonies, and as children we were fascinated by the ants that lived on them.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Peony is valued for its beautiful bloom, but also valued as a vital treatment against mental illness and demonic possession. I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that for most enthusiastic gardeners, whether they grow flowers or vegetables, gardening itself is a very important treatment against mental illness and demonic possession!

If you’d like to learn more about spring blooming bulbs, how to deal with deer in the garden, or see a lot more photos of how to use bulbs in the mixed border, visit my blog, The Obsessed Midwest Gardener

Next week, and every week, I will post a picture on Facebook of some plant that is blooming or looking fine in Walworth county. You can take a guess at what it is, and I will post the answer in this blog later in the week. They won't all be as easy as this one!

Ask a garden question if you have one, and happy gardening everybody!
