Beware the border: Illinois bans texting while driving
Despite my hypocritical threats to confiscate my son's car keys if I catch him texting while driving the family car, I admit I've done it myself.
It seems more efficient than getting involved in a long cell phone conversation. although even cell phone conversations while driving are now under fire.
In my meager defense, I text while driving rarely, and usually limit myself to the quick texts pre-programmed into my phone.
That explains why my missives are often limited to "Will arrive in 15 minutes," no matter how long it will take me to get where I’m going.
But now that Illiniois has enacted a ban on texting while driving, I've added it to my my annual New Year's resolution to improve my penmanship.
Illinois is now the 19th state to enact a ban, which took effect New Year's Day.
I don't know how anyone could honestly argue against the ban. A growing number of studies show that accident rates jump when drivers are texting, but do we really need a study?
I think common sense makes the strongest case.
So as you head toward the border, remember to close the keyboard on your phone or risk a ticket.
And if you're expecting me, and I'm running behind, I won't be texting you anymore. Just assume I "Will arrive in 15 minutes."
