3 p.m., Feb. 6, 2010 -- “Egrets” by the Wisconsin team of Tom Queoff, Mike Martino and Mike Sponholz won the first-place award Saturday at the U.S. Snow Sculpting Championships in Lake Geneva. The winner is chosen by fellow competitors.

Second place and Gene Kempfer People’s Choice Award went to Team Michigan — Luke Dehtiar, Max Dethiar and Ryan Olszowy — for “If I Only Had a Brain.”

Third place went to another Team Wisconsin, with “Parenthood,” created by Jeff Shawhan, Brett Tomczak and Jim Malkowski.

12:38 a.m., Feb. 5, 2010 -- The always-popular Kilted Snow Weasels, working on block No. 1, are determined to finish, despite a series of setbacks with team members. Bill Brown says teammate Randall Tackett slipped and fell coming to the site the first day. By today, he couldn't move, so he spent the morning in the emergency room. Brown came down with an illness yesterday, and was out of commission for the full day. Brown says they've called in some reinforcements from Rockford, and plan to work through the night to finish ... ‘We make weird things with snow’

Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 -- Mike Tendal has already shed a jacket on the shivery grounds outside the Riviera this February morning. Bundled in a couple of sweatshirts, heavy-duty coveralls and work gloves, he’s still working up a sweat digging into the cylindrical block of snow that will soon take the shape of kids playing on monkey bars. 8:19 p.m., Feb. 3, 2010 -- Several years ago, Lake Geneva Area Realty installed a Web cam at the top of the Towers in downtown, overlooking the Riviera. It's especially fun to watch during Winterfest week, where you can see the progress that turns blocks of snow into beautiful works of art. For those stuck in an office all day, it's a nice diversion. 4:45 p.m., Feb. 3, 2010 -- Neal Vogt hopes his team is in top form as they began work Wednesday on their entry in the U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Championships in Lake Geneva. Vogt, along with his brother Chris and Jon Dietz, spent last weekend tuning up at the Snow Days Chicago snow sculpting competition. STORY

Perfect conditions await as snow sculptors prepare to begin carving

11:15 a.m., Feb. 2, 2010 -- "Perfect." That's how organizer Don Berg described snow conditions Tuesday in Lake Geneva while setting up for the U.S. Nationals Snow Sculpting Championships. Berg and his set-up crews spent the day putting the finishing touches on the large blocks for competitive teams, as well as a variety of smaller blocks that area school students will carve. STORY
