On Delavan discrimination case highlights stepped-up federal prosecutions

Posted on July 23 at 3:08 p.m. ( Suggest removal )

mandy, this is not a civil lawsuit entered by the tenant, but a discrimination lawsuit entered by the government, the object being a fine rather than "getting money out of" the landlord. The government only prosecutes a handful of cases out of the many complaints they receive, so it would be wise to assume they have some substantial documentation of this discriminatory behavior.

On Kenosha high school teacher charged with assaulting student

JoyM, it's wonderful that you had "radar" for creepy older guys, but for some kids the attention of an adult is like a drug. Throw in a few dessert toppings like "this is our secret" and grooming is in full swing. It's also common that children who have previously been exposed to sexuality by an adult will then seek it out in a pattern that can be lifelong. All that said, it has no bearing on the case. This is a type of statutory rape and the question is his abuse of authority.

On Kenosha police warn of fake "Gang Week" e-mail

Why would they even do this? Gangs don't exist to attack random strangers, they exist to protect turf and each other from rival gangs. Not to mention the preposterous idea that all gangs would jointly celebrate something. They mostly hate each other.

On Suspect reportedly heard voices before going on killing rampage

The Chicago media are reporting enough information to find the case files in Wisconsin. He had some felony convictions (coke, pot, theft) back in '99 but had stayed mostly clean in Wisconsin (except for traffic and debt actions) until a recent battery conviction. It's not clear to me why he was in the halfway house to begin with unless it was part of the dispositional orders for the domestic battery (e.g. therapy). Certainly, there's nothing in the public record to distinguish him from many other people with similar criminal records.

On Neighborhood hopes to limit encroachment of student housing

I'm not sure how foreseeing it invalidates their effort. Anyway, this isn't about the institution itself, it's about the landlords who buy houses there and rent to students, something that has recently seen a sharp increase due to a dormitory shortage on campus. There are changes to the various curricula that have encouraged more on-campus students vs. commuter students, as well as an ongoing renovation project that this year had hundreds of students displaced.

Pretty incredible that it even got this far without intervention by the city attorney. It should have been an obvious recusal from the beginning.

On Could Google resurrect former Harvard Motorola plant?

This isn't about Google moving a data center into the Motorola facility but about Google broadband making it an attractive site despite its remote location.
.
That said, there are a lot of communities competing for this, which seems to be part of Google's approach.
