Operation Christmas Child volunteers from Delavan Christian School spent the weekend in Minnesota working in a warehouse with many volunteers from other states to prepare thousands of boxes to be sent to Haiti and India. The group spent about 8 hours sorting, packing and double checking the boxes.

Joe Rychlik (center, in hat) of East Troy and his family thank the East Troy community and Cousins Subs for the response to a Sept. 18 fund-raiser to help defray costs associated with Rychlik's battle against Stage 4 brain cancer. Cousins Subs in the East Brook Shopping Center donated 10 percent of the day's proceeds and the Rychlik family held a bake sale outside the store, raising more than $2,000 in total. Garden club members Naomi Peterson, Barb Gallegos, Margot Foley took part in the plant sale and exchange recently. The Nippersink Garden Club of Wisconsin and the Richmond Garden Club of Illinois donated more than 100 plants to sell or exchange for non-perishable food items during the Farmer's Market at Heuer's Restaurant in Richmond, Illinois. Members of the clubs split the proceeds with the Richmond Food Pantry and the Genoa City Food Pantry.

Eileen Zimmerman of East Troy is the featured artist for August in the Walworth County Arts Council’s display in the lobby of the Government Center on the Square in Elkhorn. Zimmerman had four years of training in high school where a love for painting and drawing was developed. “At one time I dreamed of becoming an art teacher,” said Zimmerman, “but that didn’t happen. Lake Geneva Public Library Board of Trustees President Duanne Lafrenz, Board of Trustees member Fritz Oppenlander, Board of Trustees Secretary Diane Jones, collected the generous Giving Tree donations. Due to the number of the donations, the library was able to distribute them to three local charites: the Lake Geneva Clothes Closet, Lake Geneva Emergency Food Pantry and Mt. Zion Christian Church Food Pantry. The charities will distribute the accessories free of charge to the needy this winter.

The church presented the rescue squad a check for $625 at the congregation's Thanksgiving worship service. Over 250 worshipers had been involved in the event and Thrivent for Lutherans helped match funds from the congregation's Pig Roast in order to support the good work of the Rescue Squad.

The Walworth County Senior Golf League celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2009. The league includes members who golf at various courses in the area and range in age from 50 to 90. The kickoff date for next year is April 12, 2010 at the Lauderdale Lakes Country Club. Officers for this year were President Gene Hoffman, Vice President Larry Voss and directors Ross Harmon, Bobbi Oxford and Russ Gale.

Daisy troop 3443 of Elkhorn spent Friday evening reverse trick or treating to gather food for the Elkhorn Food Pantry. They plan to deliver their donations Nov. 3. Last year, this was a successful way for the much smaller group to get food donations, but this much larger group hoped to get a monstrously large donation together. These young girls greatly appreciate everyone's help.

Gwenn Granquist, Fontana Garden Club president, presents a $500 check to Harold Friestad, Chairman of the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy in Williams Bay. Club members recently toured the Conservancy to learn about, and enjoy, the wetland restoration efforts. Funds from the Club's annual Garden Fair provide scholarships to local students, as well as supporting local environmental, educational and beautification projects.

Mary J. Abbott of Elkhorn is the artist of the month for the Walworth County Arts Council. The display will be on exhibit for the month of October at the Walworth County Government Center on the square in Elkhorn. Abbott is affiliated with the Aislinge Gallery in Lake Geneva. She has shown her work at the Wustum Art Museum in Racine and participated in the Art-in-The Park event each summer in Lake Geneva. The 12th annual McGMO Golfing for Cancer Care event was held recently. The proceeds will fund a cancer care navigator position that will serve cancer patients at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center. The McGMO was established in 1998 in memory of Dean McGregor, Ivan Grover, Calvin Monroe, who have lost their battle with cancer and Kim O’Keefe, a cancer survivor. The work of artist Jan Castle-Reed is on display during July at the Lake Geneva Public Library. Castle-Reed enjoys traveling in the U.S. and Europe with her husband to gather new ideas for paintings. She is well known locally for her annual Christmas Card painting depicting Elkhorn. Her rendition of the Lake Geneva Riviera hangs in a private collection, but has been reproduced as a signed, limited edition of 250 prints.

Prizes include two tickets for seats on the 25-yard line at the Packers/Bears game Sept. 13. Tickets are available from any board member or at these locations: Alder Food Companies, Bradley’s Department Store, The Coaches Locker, Locker Room Liquor Store and Stebnitz Builders, all in Delavan, and at Sorg’s Farm Packing in Darien. Carlene Sensenbrenner, Fontana Garden Club Scholarship chairwoman, presents a one-year scholarship to Josh Schiller, 2009 graduate of Elkhorn Area High School. Schiller will be attending Gateway Technical College, majoring in horticulture. Four additional area students, Korey Lofy, majoring in forestry recreation; Deanna Malin, majoring in horticulture; Nadine Cumming, majoring in ornamental horticulture; and Cassie Petrie, majoring in agriculture education, received continuing scholarships. The Fontana Garden Club holds a Garden Fair benefit each Memorial Day weekend, the proceeds of which fund the scholarships and area beautification and environmental projects. Members of the Big Foot Chiefs varsity baseball team pose for a photo with Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks during Weeks' surprise visit to the school May 28. As the team gathered in the gym shortly before leaving for a game, Weeks stopped by to greet them, sign autographs and talk a little baseball. It was a day off for the Brewers, although Weeks is sidelined after surgery for a torn sheath in his left wrist. Prior to the injury, Weeks was hitting .272 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs. "This is a huge thrill for our school, but especially for our varsity baseball team, players and coaches," said Big Foot Athletic Director Tim Collins. After an hour visit, Weeks climbed back into his limousine and was off to Miller Park. The event was organized by Kunes Automotive Group.

Today's TMJ4 meteorologist John Malan spent time at Star Center School on March 30.
