Public comment sought on corn treatment to deter cranes
MADISON — Wisconsin agriculture officials are inviting public comment regarding a plan to let corn growers treat seed with a nonlethal repellent to stop sandhill cranes from eating it.
The proposal would allow corn growers to use products called Avipel Liquid Seed Treatment and Avipel Hopper Box corn seed treatment. Agriculture officials say cranes that eat treated corn seed once are repelled from eating any more.
The state agriculture department says neither product is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency but that both have been used under EPA emergency exemptions.

Written comments must be received by March 29 and emails must be submitted by March 31.
