Sheriff's office: No charges expected in fatal pit bull attack

ELKHORN — The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office has all but wrapped up its investigation into the dog attack that killed a toddler March 6 in the town of Walworth, an official said Friday.

Capt. Dana Nigbor said she did not anticipate any criminal charges being filed in the mauling, which killed 14-month-old Daxton Borchardt and injured his baby sitter.

Authorities are sending the case to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office, where a final charging decision will be made. District Attorney Daniel Necci said Friday it was too soon to tell if his office would file charges.

Borchardt was at the North Lakeshore Drive home of his baby sitter, 30-year-old Susan Iwicki, when the two were attacked by Iwicki’s pit bulls March 6, authorities said. The boy was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Funeral services for Dax, as the toddler was called, were held Tuesday in Williams Bay.

Iwicki and her family expressed their sympathy for the boy’s parents, Jeff and Kim Borchardt, in a statement released to The Gazette.

“We cannot express in words alone our feelings over the tragic loss of their son,” the family said. “All of our lives have forever been altered, and our misery—though pale in comparison to theirs—is overwhelming.”
