— The City of Whitewater Police Department is seeking donations for its first ever K-9 unit.

The department would like to obtain a Labrador retriever to be used in detection of controlled substances, missing person searches, tracking fleeing suspects, and in drug talks at schools and community groups.

Estimated start-up costs are $45,000, covering the first year costs of the dog, training, equipment and staff time. The department said it has already arranged for food and veterinary care.

Budget constraints mean the police department is turning to citizens, businesses and civic groups for support of the estimated expenses.

Checks may be made out to: Whitewater Police Department, K-9 Unit Foundation, 312 W. Whitewater St., Whitewater, WI 53190. For more information contact Captain Brian Uhl at the Whitewater Police Department at (262) 473-0555.
