Man in custody in tavern robbery

BRODHEAD — A rural Brodhead man is accused in a robbery that occurred just steps away from the Brodhead Police Department early Thursday morning.
Richard W. Parot, 55, of W989 Taylor Trail, was arrested shortly before 9 a.m. Thursday, according to a police news release. He was held at the Green County Jail.
The robbery occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when the tavern was closed, according to Brodhead police. A man pointed a handgun at an employee and forced the employee into a food cooler before leaving with cash, Brodhead Police Chief Tom Moczynski said.
The employee of M&J's Tavern, 1117 W. Second Ave., was able to open the cooler door and walked across the alley to the police department, Moczynski said.
Police talked to people who had been at the tavern that night and quickly focused on Parot as a person of interest, Moczynski said Thursday afternoon.
Police suspect Parot was at the tavern that night. Moczynski would not reveal more details about how the investigation led to Parot's residence, a short drive outside of Brodhead.
Parot was found in a vehicle outside his residence, where he is not listed as the property owner, Moczynski said. Investigators executed a search warrant on the house.
Parot was arrested on charges of robbery and victim intimidation. Moczynski would not give particulars about the second charge, but he said robbers often threaten their victims about talking to police.
Moczynski would not comment on the amount of money taken or recovered.
Moczynski complimented the help received from the Green County Sheriff's Office, including the sheriff's tactical response team.
