— Small villages and big cities are finding social media such as Facebook and Twitter good venues to get news out to residents—whether that be a water main break or traffic alerts, according to a story in the Northwest Herald.

Hebron, with a population of 1,200, saw the “likes” on its Facebook page jump from eight to 73 when news of a water main break was posted in November.

Lake County found Twitter helpful in reaching drivers stranded in a blizzard that stopped traffic cold.

Area officials have also used Foursquare and Google Plus, and say such social media sites are an excellent way to communicate with residents, particularly in emergencies.
