Crowds--those who braved the icy waters and their support staff--gathered on the shore of Geneva Lake in Williams Bay Jan 1, for the 2013 Polar Plunge. Photo by Heather Noel Nelson.

It's a local annual tradition for the brave--or the crazy, depending on your point of view--every January 1: the Polar Plunge.

People taking the plunge turned out on the shore of Geneva Lake at Williams Bay, some dressed up in costumes, others minimally dressed in bikinis and swim trunks. Others just came to watch or be on hand to offer blankets or clothing to those emerging from the water.
