— A federal court has given groups suing the state broad access to computers used by the Republican-controlled Legislature to redraw political boundaries in 2011.

Monday's ruling by a panel of three judges in U.S. District Court in Milwaukee is the latest setback for Republican lawmakers who have repeatedly tried to block releasing documents related to the long-running case.

The ruling says the groups suing must have access to the computers immediately as they are "extremely likely" to contain information that should have been disclosed before the case went to trial last year.

The judges say that it is likely some form of fraud, misrepresentation or misconduct has occurred.

The lawsuit was brought by a group of Democrats and immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera.

I understand how some can be upset by the redistricting, and want to make changes. I honestly have no problem with that. I’m struggling with what information might still be on the ‘Republican-controlled’ computers?
.
And I am not so naive to believe that lines could have been drawn to benefit a particular political leader or party. “Battles” over boundaries have been a part of our history for over 200 years.
.
But I’m justwonderin how we have drifted away from using positive energy for change, and toward the negative aspect of “let’s sue someone”. I sincerely hope that our schools are teaching tomorrow’s leaders to work for change, and NOT teaching them to spend countless dollars on going to court - in this case to get access to a computer that was used in 2011.
.
And I’m just wondering, in who’s best interest does this group feel they are acting? If there is a group of residents that feels they are not being properly represented by their elected officials, don’t THEY have the option of electing someone else? If that same group of residents feels that the boundary in which they live, unfairly denies them the opportunity to elect the political representative of their choice, don’t THEY have the option of working to move the line?
.
What does bother me, are those ‘outsiders’ who come to our state, our cities, and our neighborhoods, to bring about the change that THEY want, disregarding the residents themselves.
.
Justwondering… can’t we work our way back to a position of being progressive? Of working toward positive change? Of electing people who represent US? Of teaching our children that using the courts to bring legal action against someone should be the LAST resort, instead of the first?
