Principal out with cancer
JANESVILLE The principal of Monroe Elementary School is ill and will be out indefinitely, according to a letter from Superintendent Karen Schulte that was sent home with students Tuesday.
Principal Lori Burns began treatment for cancer Tuesday, according to the letter.
"Mrs. Burns and her family would benefit from positive thoughts and prayers as they take on this battle," Schulte wrote.
Support staff will be available for Monroe students and staff members who need help in dealing with the news, the letter stated.
Mike Kuehne, a retired Janesville principal, will fill in as principal for the rest of the week, the letter states.
Burns led a fundraising effort last fall as Monroe School won $50,000 a U.S. Cellular contest. Hundreds of people throughout the community were mobilized to register with the company and then vote online.
Burns has taught in Janesville since 1991, including 12 years at Edison Middle School, according to Gazette files. Burns took over as interim principal at Monroe in 2005. The "interim" in her title was removed the next year.
