Jefferson High football coach Steve Gee said his team will be doing some extra running Monday after committing nine penalties during its Rock Valley North showdown with Evansville/Albany.

Despite the mistakes, the Eagles still found a way to grind out a sloppy 21-7 victory over the Blue Devils here Friday evening.

Eagle running back Zeke Emerick added a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs, while the defense held the Blue Devils offense in check to help Jefferson (5-1, 4-1) remain tied with East Troy (5-1, 4-1) atop the Rock Valley North.

“I think going into this game we were talented but not confident on the defensive side of the ball,” Gee said. “But I think we’re going to see a lot of positive things on defense and a lot of guys are going to be confident going into the rest of the season.”

Gee’s offense certainly looked confident in the second half.

The Eagles unleashed a textbook 15-play, 84-yard opening second half drive that was capped by Emerick’s 1-yard touchdown run. That gave the Eagles a commanding 21-0 lead late in the third.

The Blue Devils (4-2, 3-2) finally cut into the three-score deficit in the fourth quarter behind quarterback David Jenkins’ 6-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Shell. That made the score 21-7.

But Evansville simply ran out of time from there as the Eagles’ running continually gauged the Blue Devil defense to a total of 323 yards on 52 carries.

“They (Jefferson) grind it out pretty good and it’s tough to stop them,” Evansville head coach Ron Grovesteen said. “What killed us in the first half was the pass. We had guys in position, but just didn’t make the play.”

Grovesteen was referring to the Eagles first scoring drive of the game that was finished off by quarterback Dustin Moldenhauer’s 13-yard touchdown pass to Jalen McGraw. That put the Eagles on top, 6-0.

Jefferson went back to its trademark running game on its next possession and hit pay dirt with Emerick’s 1-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

But the Eagles failed to add to their 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

“The first quarter I was pleased both sides of the ball, but the second quarter we seemingly shot ourselves in

the foot with penalties and couldn’t get anything going,” Gee said.
