— Since August 16, Jackie Grabbert of Woodland Park, Colo., has been on a 1,200-mile journey by bicycle to her 40th high school class reunion in Lake Geneva. Badger High School will welcome her back as she crosses the finish line at the front doors of the building on Mon., September 10, at 9:30 a.m. with a small reception of staff, students, community, and family members.

The ride, just another of her many endurance event challenges, is also dedicated to raising funds for the American Cancer Society. Having lost her mother 20 years ago to lung cancer and her significant other at the age of 42 to bone sarcoma, Grabbert has been raising money for charities since 1976. At that time, she and her mother raised over $1,000 for the ACS for an event called Tour le Cure, which was a 70-mile biking trek around Lake Geneva. In years following, Jackie participated in 17 annual 100-mile runs called Strides for Life, 4-day events raising money for the ACS in southwestern Michigan. She has also been actively involved in raising money for Komen for the Cure of southeastern Colorado, as well as for the American Cancer Society as a participant in the Relay for Life.

Long distance challenges have always been intriguing to Grabbert. As she tells is, she has no fast-twitch muscle fiber, but can go the distances. having also run in 15 marathons and biked in eight Bicycle Tour of Colorado and/or Ride the Rockies events, biking across several states seemed a natural next challenge. When word of the upcoming class reunion came out, the opportunity seemed too good to pass up.

Her sister, Jeri, of Cuba City, is serving as Jackie’s personal SAG (support and gear) vehicle driver throughout the adventure. Jeri will drive the car and pull the camper from one town to the next along the journey, averaging about 60 miles per day. Jackie will have a few days to rest up before the reunion on September 15, one day before her 58th birthday.

Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society online at http://teamacs.acsevents.org. Tab to “Donate to a Participant” and type in the name Jackie Grabbert. Help her reach her goal of raising $5,000!

Classmates, family and friends of Jackie are invited to join in greeting Jackie as she completes her journey.
