— The village of Pleasant Prairie in Kenosha County is urging a voluntary evacuation of part of the town because of possible high waves on Lake Michigan.

Residents in an area of Pleasant Prairie threatened by high waves are urged to protect or move their property and belongings and evacuate before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The village says the National Weather Service is advising that dangerous high waves of 14 to 18 feet are expected along Lake Michigan as superstorm Sandy churns along the East Coast.

Village Administrator Mike Pollocoff says the voluntary evacuation area covers about 265 homes. The village near the Illinois border has about 20,000 residents.

The village is making sandbags available to residents in the evacuation area.
