To participate

To give Monroe Elementary School a boost in the U.S. Cellular Calling All Communities sweepstakes:

1. Go to a U.S. Cellular store to get a voting code. In Janesville, stores are located at 1717 Center Ave. and 2431 Milton Ave.

2. Enter the code along with other information at uscellular.com and vote once for Monroe Elementary School.

Voting ends Sunday.

— Only two days remain in a contest that would give Monroe Elementary School students new technology without any cost to taxpayers.

The contest is U.S. Cellular Calling All Communities, and Monroe is trying for a slice of $1 million in prizes.

Here’s how it works: Local residents go to a local U.S. Cellular store to get a registration code. Then they register and vote for Monroe online.

The winning team gets $150,000. The next 17 high scoring teams will receive $50,000 to use any way they want.

As of Oct. 15, Monroe Elementary School was in sixth place. Voting ends Sunday.

Monroe Elementary Principal Lori Burns said that if her school wins, she plans to transform every classroom into a “21st century learning classroom.”

The priority purchase would be SMART Boards for every room. Those would help a lot of students at once, Burns said. SMART Boards are an electronic device that allows teachers and students to interact with information.

Any remaining money would be used for iPads and laptops, Burns said.

Even if the school wins $150,000, the school couldn’t provide laptops for every student, but they could make a dent.

Burns has agreed to spend the night on the school roof if the school wins.
