Darien officials still not commenting on police issue

DARIEN — Village of Darien officials are staying mum about a disappearing agenda item that called for “the discussion of potential charges” against Police Chief Hunter Gilmore.

The discussion was to be part of meeting announced Thursday morning. By late Thursday afternoon, the discussion of the police chief had been removed from the agenda.

No reason was given, and officials would not comment about the discussion of potential charges on the earlier agenda.

After the meeting Friday, Village President Evelyn Etten and Village Administrator Diana Dykstra both said they could not comment on any aspect of the issue.

Village of Darien Attorney Brad Lochowicz would say only that the item was removed from the agenda. He would not say why.

Lochowicz confirmed that Gilmore was still employed by the village.

When asked if Gilmore still was actively working and on the job, Lochowicz would only say that Gilmore remained the chief of police.

When Gilmore was asked the same question, he said he was still actively working and had done nothing wrong. He referred all further questions to his attorney, Robert Mihelich.

The Gazette was not able to reach Mihelich for comment Friday afternoon.

Friday’s meeting would have been the second closed-session meeting about the chief in less than two months.

A joint personnel and village board meeting was held Aug. 27 to “review the performance of the police chief.”

After that meeting, Etten said the board did not discuss any disciplinary issues.
