Two critically injured in two-car crash in Walworth
WALWORTH Two Crystal Lake residents were critically injured, and two more Illinois residents suffered minor injuries after a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 14/67 and Lakeville Road around 5 p.m. Sunday in the town of Walworth, according to a release from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.
Shawn E. Cummings, 29, and Lia M.Cummings, 7, both of Crystal Lake, Ill., suffered critical injuries and were flown by Flight for Life to area hospitals. Shawn Cummings was taken to Janesville Hospital, and Lia Cummings to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
According to the release, Shawn Cummings was driving a 1996 Chevy Cavalier eastbound on Highway 67 when she failed to yield after stopping at a stop sign at the intersection.
Scott D. Bergstrom, 58, of Huntley, Ill., was driving a 2008 Chevy Van towing a 1996 Smokercraft fishing boat and trailer, traveling southbound on Highway 14. Bergstrom’s van could not avoid the collision and struck the driver’s side of the Cavalier.
Both vehicles came to rest at the southeast corner of the intersection of Highways 14/67 and Lakeville Road.
A passenger in the van, William F. Binotti, 58, of Tinley Park, Ill, was transported by ambulance to an unnamed hospital with minor injuries.
Sabrina A. Hinde, 22, of Glendale Heights, Ill., who was a passenger in the Cavalier, also was taken by ambulance to an unnamed hospital with minor injuries.
Drivers and passengers in both vehicles were all wearing seatbelts, and Lia Cummings was in a child restraint seat.
The crash remains under investigation.
The road was shut down for three hours after the accident.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by fire and rescue departments from Walworth and Sharon, Paratech Ambulance Service, and police from Walworth, Fontana, Sharon, and the town of Geneva, the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, the McHenry (Ill.) County Sheriff’s Office, Flight for Life Milwaukee and Flight for Life McHenry.
