Former Warhawk star arraigned on drug charges

ELKHORN — Former UW-Whitewater football star Levell Coppage was arraigned Tuesday on four felony and two misdemeanor drug charges.

Coppage, 22, of 213 N. Fraternity Lane, No. 206, Whitewater, appeared in court with his attorney and waived his right to a speedy trial on four felony charges of delivering marijuana and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Walworth County Judge Phillip Koss continued the case until Friday, Jan. 11, at 8:30 a.m. for a status conference.

UW-Whitewater Dean of Students Mary Beth Mackin said Coppage is no longer enrolled as a student at the campus.

Coppage was the star running back for the UW-Whitewater football team in 2009, 2010 and 2011 when the Warhawks won three consecutive national championships.

Coppage is accused of selling marijuana to the same confidential informant on four occasions in September.

He was arrested Sept. 25 when officers stopped a vehicle he was operating.

The criminal complaint accuses Coppage of selling marijuana from a parking lot on Fraternity Lane near his residence and at a residence on East Main Street in Whitewater.

Coppage faces a maximum prison sentence of 14 years on the felony charges and seven months in jail on the misdemeanor charges.

He remains free on a signature bond.
